Young Librarians of the Future

“I recognise that people‘s perceptions of libraries and librarians are crucial. We need to really sell the brilliant library ‘offer’ to encourage more people to use our services - in our buildings or remotely. I tackle misconceptions head on by going out to people and proving how much we offer. ”

I will never know what this year would have held for me if I had not won the Young Librarians of the Future award, but I strongly believe that it acted as a catalyst for a very exciting year for me:

  • I attended the MLA Future Leaders programme, which provided me with tools for inspiring, challenging and leading libraries now and in the future.
  • I successfully applied for funding to undertake a study trip to New York Public Library, where I explored how a different library system engages with the local community.
  • I was invited to attend a focus group to influence the future direction of the Chartered Institute Library Information Professionals and I have also completed my Chartership.

Most exciting of all, I was successful in applying for a new position in a neighbouring authority. My new role as Senior Information Librarian, for North Somerset Library and Information Service, has enabled me to utilise my knowledge, develop new skills and lead change.

I am still in touch with the network of like minded, enthusiastic librarians that I met through the Love Libraries campaign. We have had some lively debates through our blog and have been able to share our experiences and support each other throughout the year.
